Hair loss has many causes, but the most common culprit in both men and women is androgenetic alopecia. This genetic condition typically affects the top of the head. It occurs when a testosterone derivative called DHT attacks hair follicles, causing hair loss.
Other causes of hair loss include major stress, infection, certain medications, and underlying medical conditions such as diabetes. Almost 50% of American men and about 20% of American women experience hair loss.
The most successful transplants take place in patients who have waited until their hairlines have become stable after a period of hair loss.
NeoGraft is suitable for both men and women. Hair grows in cycles, so it’s important to remember that the results of NeoGraft will not be immediate. The transplanted hairs will remain on your head for a couple of weeks after the procedure, at which point they’ll naturally shed. This is a natural part of the hair growth cycle. The underlying follicles function normally and will begin to produce new hair within a few months. A noticeably fuller head of hair takes about 6 months to develop.
We perform NeoGraft while your scalp is numbed with local anesthesia, so you shouldn’t feel much discomfort (if any). Many patients say that the time commitment is the most challenging aspect of the procedure, but you’re able to take breaks to use the restroom and move around as needed.
The donor site does need to be shaved to harvest the maximum number of follicles. However, patients who wear their hair long are often able to conceal this shaved area under their existing hair while it grows back. It is not necessary to shave the entire head for a NeoGraft procedure.
It’s also important to remember that, unlike a Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) procedure, NeoGraft leaves no visible scar.
