Microneedling

Microneedling, sometimes called collagen induction therapy, is a breakthrough in skin resurfacing. This versatile treatment is fully customizable and can treat a variety of common skin concerns, from acne to wrinkles. The best part of microneedling in Louisville, Lexington, and Floyds Knobs at CaloSpa® is that it uses your body’s own healing process, not unnecessary chemicals or surgery, to rejuvenate your skin.

At CaloSpa, we offer traditional microneedling using the SkinPen® for an even more effective way to reduce fat, tighten skin, treat acne and reduce the size of pores.

Microneedling at CaloSpa®

Just as its name implies, microneedling uses very small needles to puncture the top layers of the skin. These discreet perforations, which are difficult to see with the naked eye, stimulate the skin’s own healing process. As the skin heals itself, it increases production of collagen and elastin, 2 important proteins that are instrumental in keeping the skin soft, toned, and resilient.

Because microneedling relies on a natural biological process, there’s no risk of allergic reaction. Although microneedling cannot alter the structure of the face the way facelift surgery can, it can improve the appearance of many surface irregularities, so it is a strong partner procedure with surgery.

Traditional microneedling is a good treatment for:

  • Scars
  • Acne
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Skin laxity
  • Sun damage

RF microneedling uses heat and radio frequency to penetrate the skin and provide additional healing from within. In addition to treating the same concerns as traditional microneedling, RF microneedling is used for:

  • Reducing under eye bags by eliminating fat
  • Tightening the jawline and jowls
  • Reducing lower cheek fullness

The Procedure

A typical microneedling session using the DemaPen® device lasts between 45 minutes and 1 hour. To begin, a qualified member of our aesthetic team applies a light topical anesthetic to ensure a comfortable experience. Once the anesthetic takes effect, he or she then runs the microneedle over the targeted area of the face.

Although microneedling can create impressive results on its own, the process also makes the skin more receptive to topical skincare products, enhancing their effectiveness. During your skin care consultation, our aesthetic professionals help you decide which course of action will best create your desired results.

RF Microneedling

In order to achieve even greater results with microneedling, at CaloSpa, we offer RF microneedling treatment. Like traditional microneedling, RF microneedling uses tiny needles to penetrate the top layers of the skin. Unlike traditional microneedling, RF microneedling also delivers radiofrequency waves deep in the tissue, targeting and eliminating fat under the skin. The heat generated from the RF stimulates collagen in the tissue, breaking up unwanted fat and tightening the skin to help reduce the appearance of loose skin and pockets of fat on the face, neck, jawline and chin. We can use this to sculpt the face, tightening the skin and removing pockets of fat that settle during the aging process.

RF microneedling is also used for treating active acne and improving the appearance of scars. By penetrating the deeper layers of skin, the heat from RF microneedling shrinks or destroys the sebaceous glands, resulting in less acne and smaller pores.

Often Asked

Does microneedling hurt?

No. Thanks to a topical anesthetic and the very small size of the needle used, the microneedling procedure is not painful.

Patients may experience some redness or numbness at the treatment area for the first 24 – 48 hours, but this subsides quickly.

What is recovery like?

Most people don't require any downtime following a microneedling or RF microneedling treatment. Redness, minor swelling, and a "sunburnt" sensation are all common reactions, but they're not typically severe enough to keep patients from engaging in normal activities. Makeup may be applied several hours after a treatment.

How many sessions will I need?

Although some patients with minor concerns may find that 1 treatment is enough to create satisfactory results, most patients require a series of 4 or 5 treatments spaced a couple of weeks apart. During your consultation, a member of our team gives you a specific timeline that reflects your needs and goals.
