When it comes to erasing wrinkles and rejuvenating your face, few treatments are as popular as BOTOX®. Our Lexington & Louisville-area spas have helped countless people have the youthful skin they’re looking for. We understand some people feel a bit nervous before their first treatment session as they don’t know what to expect.

Good news: There’s no reason to fear this quick and easy procedure. Here are a few important things to know before you arrive at our office for your first session.

How Exactly Does BOTOX Work?

BOTOX uses an active ingredient called botulinum. When this protein is injected into specific facial muscles, they are temporarily relaxed and can no longer crease the overlying skin. This keeps your skin smooth and helps your face look instantly more youthful. Other neurotoxins—such as Dysport®, Jeuveau, and Xeomin®—work similarly.  Our providers are always careful to create flattering, natural-looking results that don’t appear “frozen” or “overdone.”

What To Expect During Your BOTOX Appointment

Injectables like BOTOX are a popular treatment option for first-time patients. If you’re new to cosmetic procedures and are unsure of what to expect, here are a few answers to commonly asked questions.

Is BOTOX Safe?

Yes, BOTOX is an FDA-approved treatment that has been trusted for many years. While there are many uses for BOTOX in medical settings (migraines, jaw pain, reducing excessive armpit sweating), it is most commonly used to treat wrinkles around the brows, eyes, and forehead. Side effects are mild and typically include slight swelling or bruising around the injection site. However, if you are pregnant or may become pregnant, we suggest waiting to resume treatment until after childbirth.

Does Treatment Hurt?

Like any injection, there can be mild discomfort during treatment. But if needles make you nervous, don’t worry—our providers use an ultra-fine needle roughly the size of those used for insulin shots. The entire procedure typically takes only 10 to 15 minutes. We can apply an icepack after treatment to slightly numb the area.

What Is BOTOX Recovery Like?

As a nonsurgical procedure, there is no downtime required after BOTOX. You can return to work or home immediately after your appointment. Your results will gradually develop over the course of 3 to 5 days. Common side effects include swelling, redness, or slight bruising around the injection site, but these issues resolve quickly.

How Long Do BOTOX Results Last?

While BOTOX injections can create beautiful results, they don’t last forever. The effects of BOTOX and other neuromodulators typically wear off after 3 to 4 months. Most men and women schedule touch-up appointments to maintain their new look. Studies have shown that patients who have regularly scheduled BOTOX injections can enjoy longer-lasting results over time.

By knowing what to expect, you can feel confident heading into your first BOTOX session. If you’re in the Louisville or Lexington, KY, area and would like to learn more about anti-aging treatments, request a consultation online or call (859) 269-2256.
