Sculptra® Aesthetic

Sculptra Aesthetic is a popular way to refresh the face among our patients at CaloSpa® in Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky, and Floyds Knobs, Indiana. Sculptra is an injectable filler designed to treat deep wrinkles and the loss of volume in the upper cheeks and temples. We can also use it to provide a nonsurgical butt lift. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers such as JUVÉDERM®, Sculptra is a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) filler that works gradually and lasts longer, making it an excellent choice for many of our patients.

How Sculptra Aesthetic Works

Plastic surgeons know that the loss of skin elasticity and environmental effects, such as sun damage, are not the only causes of facial aging. The loss of volume is also a concern, creating a hollowed out or sunken appearance that needs to be addressed to restore a more youthful look. In recent years, durable fillers, sometimes called “volumizers,” have been developed to restore that lost volume.

Sculptra is an excellent treatment for:

  • Sunken cheeks and temples
  • Deep folds between the nose and the mouth, called nasolabial folds or smile lines
  • The lines that frame your mouth, called marionette lines
  • Chin wrinkles

Once injected, Sculptra triggers a mild inflammatory reaction under the skin, prompting the body’s immune system to start producing collagen. The process gradually increases the amount of collagen being produced, resulting in smoother, younger-looking skin.

Although the results don’t match those of a surgical injectable fillers for an overall rejuvenation.

The Procedure

We administer Sculptra in a series of customized treatments. Typically, it takes 3 sessions spread out over a couple of months to get the desired results, but our specialists tailor your treatments to your specific goals.

Your injector applies a topical anesthetic before beginning the treatment to limit any discomfort. Sculptra injections are slightly different than other fillers because the product is threaded evenly across the treatment area, as opposed to “spot” injections used with other products. The injector immediately massages the area to ensure Sculptra is evenly distributed and to help prevent bumps from forming.

Swelling is a common side effect (which offers a preview of how the results may appear). The swelling usually subsides within a few days, and your wrinkles temporarily reappear as the gradual process of collagen replacement continues. Results appear gradually within the first few weeks after each treatment session. Once you’ve complete the individualized treatment plan, the results typically last 2 years or more.

Besides swelling at the treatment site, other side effects may include redness, tenderness, bruising, and itching at the injection site. These rarely last more than a few days and resolve on their own.

Nonsurgical Butt Lift

People who want to avoid surgery or do not have enough excess fat for a Brazilian butt lift, may choose a Sculptra butt lift. This procedure provides subtle enhancement to the buttocks gradually over time through increased collagen growth. Injections are made into areas where more volume is needed. Treated areas may be tender initially, but there is no downtime needed. As with Sculptra for the face, multiple treatment sessions, spaced about 3 weeks apart, are usually needed. Results are typically reached within 6 months and last 18 months to 2 years.

Often Asked

When will I see results?

You’ll notice some initial results after each treatment session (usually about 3 sessions are needed), but the final results may take up to a couple of months to appear. The results usually last 2 years or more. Most other fillers last only 6 months to a year.

Is there downtime after a Sculptra treatment?

Downtime after each treatment session is minimal. Swelling and redness usually dissipate within a day or two.

Can I combine Sculptra with other non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments?

We may recommend combining Sculptra with BOTOX® Cosmetic, another filler, or even a laser skin resurfacing treatment as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. That’s something to discuss during your spa consultation.
