Why Fall Is the Perfect Time for Laser Skin Resurfacing

A woman pleased with her skin after getting a laser treatment in the fall.

During the warm summer months, most of us spend plenty of time outdoors with family and friends. Unfortunately, this sun exposure can easily damage skin and create fine lines, dark spots, and other issues. Laser skin resurfacing at our Lexington and Louisville, KY, practice can fade imperfections and create clear, smooth skin—and if you’re trying to freshen up your face after a long, hot summer, fall is the perfect time to begin.

What is laser skin resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing is a skincare procedure that improves skin texture and appearance. Lasers skin treatments remove the outermost layer of skin, revealing the fresh, new skin underneath. Treatment can diminish wrinkles, acne scars, sun spots, and other common signs of aging. Several types of lasers treatments are on the market, and depending on your needs, one type may be better suited to your skin than another.

Contour TRL™ and Halo™ are two of the most popular laser options at our practice. Halo treats the skin with microbeams of laser energy, while Contour TRL is a powerful tool to treat significant signs of sun damage and aging. Both options can be used on target areas such as the face and neck. Your provider will work with you to determine the best laser for your specific needs.

What kind of skin damage can be created during the summer?

The sun’s rays take a toll on your skin. A sunburn can be a short-term problem, but it spurs long-term issues underneath the skin. Sun damage (also known as photoaging) happens as ultraviolet (UV) light penetrates your skin and changes the DNA at a cellular level. This damage occurs in the deepest layers of skin, meaning you may not see the visible signs until months—or years—later.

Common signs of photoaging include wrinkles, brown spots, broken capillaries, or uneven skin texture. These issues are accelerated when the sun is stronger during summer and you spend more time outside without proper protection. A VISIA® Complexion Analysis in our office reveals many of these skin issues.

Why is cooler weather better for skin resurfacing treatments?

The outer layers of skin protect your face from the wind, sun, and weather. When these layers are removed and reveal fresh skin underneath, the new layer of skin is much more sensitive. Fall is one of the best times for laser skin resurfacing because there’s less risk for direct sun damage. The light is less intense and people spend more time indoors, allowing your skin to heal while you enjoy a cozy day inside.

Your skin may be extra sensitive for many months after your procedure. Be sure to wear a minimum of SPF 30 every day to reduce your risk of sunburn and sun damage.
